Frenectomy

In the mouth are two places where muscular tissue connects two areas. One is the labial frenum, which connects the upper lip to the gum area above the upper teeth. The other is the lingual frenum, which connects the base of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. When the frenum are overgrown, it can cause several dental problems such as gum recession, a gap in the front teeth, speech problems and inability to move the tongue. In older adults, the labial frenum can cause issues with dentures not fitting as they should.

To alleviate these issues, Dr. Johnson can perform a frenectomy. Using a laser, Dr. Johnson can loosen or remove the frenulum. The procedure typically lasts less than 30 minutes and is performed with a local anesthetic.
